Basic Search Help

The search pages allow you to query the MR4 database. Using the simple query interface you can specify the search terms, search mode and MR4 categories. These are discussed below.

Search Terms

The search terms and mode define the criteria for finding relevant records. Terms are complete or partial words that you're interested in finding matches with. Partial words are entered with a trailing asterisk (*) - for instance, plasmo* will find records matching all words starting with the string 'plasmo'.

After specifying the terms and mode, select the MR4 categories for searching. The following categories can be searched at present:-

  • All Categories - default selection
  • Antibodies
  • Cell lines/hybridomas
  • DNA/RNA Reagents
  • Libraries
  • Mosquitoes
  • Parasites
  • Proteins/Peptides

By specifying the search category only a subset of the MR4 collection will be queried. If you leave the default selection of 'All Categories' then all of the categories will be searched.

Submitting the Search

Click the 'search' button to submit the query or the 'reset' button to begin a new query. Records matching the query are displayed in a summary list organized by MR4 Category.

Advanced Search Help

The advanced search augments the basic search with the ability to (a) constrain searches to fields within records, and to (b) interactively build a complex boolean query.

Searching Record Fields

Each category in the MR4 collection has a set of descriptors, or fields. Limiting the query to a desired field (or set of fields) improves the accuracy of a search. The advanced search page allows the user a choice of querying the complete text of all records (All Fields) or of delimiting the query to only a few fields.

Building a Boolean Expression

Search Results

Both basic and advanced searches format the results in the same fashion. The results page begins with a summary of the number of hits in each of the MR4 categories, followed by summaries of individual records. The summary of each record contains the MR4 catalog number, the reagent designation and a brief description.

Search results can be viewed by (a) clicking on individual catalog numbers,or (b) selecting multiple catalog items.

The advanced search page also helps in building queries by combining up to three search terms using the boolean operators: and (&), or ( | ), and not (^), and exact phrase (" ")
